Aunque parezca extraño, originalmente eran dos tradiciones poéticas diferentes. Por ejemplo, los carols en realidad estaban hechos para ser bailados y tenían toques religiosos, mientras los villancicos, como dice su nombre, eran cantos recitados por villanos(gente de la villa, campo) que no necesariamente era religiosos. Poco a poco, ambos empezaron a ser cantados únicamente en la navidad, abandonando sus características iniciales.
Fue alrededor del siglo XIX y XIX que simultáneamente se volvieron sinónimos de canciones navideñas religiosas(aunque ya existían canciones religiosas navideñas anteriores a estas). Finalmente, durante el siglo XX hasta nuestra actualidad, se eliminó el factor religioso y se consideran canciones con temática navideña. Es por eso que hay villancicos en inglés religiosos como “Silent Night”, hasta más románticos como “Last Christmas”.

Aunque no lo creas, este famoso villancico es de origen austriaco (Stille Nacht). Fue compuesto por el alemán Franz Xaver Gruber y el austriaco Joseph Mohr. Es considerado patrimonio cultural de la humanidad y ha sido grabado por muchas personas.

El segundo mejor villancico en inglés de nuestra lista es “We wish you a marry christmas”. Fue compuesto por el británico Arthur Warrell, a principios del siglo XIX. Tuvo muchas versiones, pero finalmente se quedó con la que conocemos en la actualidad.

3. Jingle bell(y sus variaciones)
La canción original fue compuesta por el americano James Lord Pierpont, con el título de “The one horse open Sleigh”, en el otoño de 1857. Cuenta la leyenda que fue escrito para un coro del día de gracias o una canción para beber.
Aunque originalmente no había conexión con la navidad, desde el 1860 se asoció con la festividad. Su primera grabación fue en 1889, y se cree que fue el primer villancico navideño en tener este honor.
También se crearon diferentes versiones, siendo la más famosa una versión de Rock de Bobby Helms en 1957.

En el caso de esta popular canción, que quizás escuchaste en español(interpretada por Luis Miguel), fue escrita por los americanos J. Fred Coots y Haven Gillispies. Harry Reser fue el primero en grabar la canción en 1934.En cambio, la versión que enamoró al público americano fue de Eddi Ranton en ese mismo año.
Se convirtió en un hit instantáneo. Aproximadamente 500,000 copias de las partituras fueron ordenadas mientras 30,000 discos fueron vendidos en 24 horas.

La canción trata de un personaje ficticio, Rodolfo el reno, que salvo la navidad. El villancico demuestra como Rodolfo, quién era ridiculizado por su brillante nariz, es un héroe por guiar a santa a través de la niebla. Este villancico fue compuesto por el duo de “british pop” Wham!. Llegó a la esfera pública un diciembre de 1984 y durante 5 semanas fue el número dos de los Uk singles chart. Después de mucho tiempo, la canción logró ser la número uno en Inglaterra el año nuevo del 2021, más de 36 años desde su concepción.
No solo es popular en Reino Unido, ya que también ha estado en los “tops” de Dinamarca, Alemania, Australia, Estados Unidos y otros países. Cómo dato interesante, el dúo donó todas las regalías de la canción para ayudar a combatir el problema de hambruna que sufrió Etiopia durante 1983 a 1985.

El último villancico de inglés en esta lista es otro clásico. Su título original es “Cantique de Noel”(canto de Noel). En realidad es un poema escrito por el poeta Placide Cappeu, en 1843.
Fue el compositor Adolphe Adam que le agregó música en 1847. Existe una versión en español, conocida como “Oh santa noche”. En ella se narra el nacimiento de Jesús y se acostumbra que sea interpretada por un barítono o tenor acompañado de un órgano.
A diferencia del primer villancico de nuestra lista, que es conocido en todo el mundo, este solo alcanzó gran popularidad en países de habla inglesa.
